Mediterranean Sea

Mediterranean Sea – A sea in the centre of lands

In spite of its small size (just 1% of world oceans), the Mediterranean Sea hosts a huge variety of living forms, one fourth of which do only exist here. Today, the Mediterranean Sea is considered a temperated-warm sea. Yet, its long geological and biological history is among the most troublesome on Earth.

Its intrinsic wealth of natural resourches made the Mediterranean Sea a market and a rich fishery area. As a consequence, over the last 5,000 years it often became a battleground and a meeting point for different cultures. Some of these cultures have now disappeared (such as the Ancient Greeks, Egyptians and Mesopotamian area peoples). Nonetheless they left thousands of priceless traces such as temples, villages, artefacts and writings. One of the best known work from the Classic age is the world-famous Odyssey, telling the story of Ulysses and his endless pilgrimage throughout the Mediterranean Sea. Thanks to Ulysses' journey we can actually meet, and come to know, the various cultures and peoples whose signs are still visible today in ancient ruins and coastal towns.
